Those Long Legs Come in Handy for a Tot

Today we disassembled the baby crib. We had to get rid of it. She was escaping.

This afternoon I put her back in her crib because she was really fussy and hadn't napped well. I was in the next room picking up some toys for a few minutes listening to her scream and cry. I started walking down the hall and realized that now her cries seemed right behind her door - not coming from her crib. So, I opened the door and there she was: standing in front of it, crying. She wasn't crying like, I'm hurt. Instead, it was more like, "I can't believe you would just put me in my room."

I thought back to a few days ago when I had taken my time getting her out of the crib in the morning. When I did walk in, I caught her with one leg swung up over the side rail, and her hand on the footboard of the crib, hoisting herself up. So, I pretty much know how she got out today. I just don't know how smooth the landing was.

We were at a decision crossroad. One, remove the crib and hope for the best with hopes of sleeping in the toddler bed at 19 mos. Or two, leave her in the crib where I know I can put her to bed and hope she doesn't get out again or get hurt. How do you make such a decision?
Look it up in the trusty "baby instruction book!!" (my mom got it for us):
The book stated that if the baby is 35" then they should be out of the crib. That settled it: Scout is 35.5" (as of 6 weeks ago). Down came the crib. It wasn't smooth sailing at bedtime, but as I type this she is asleep in her toddler bed.

Facinating!
I'm gonna go measure baby C!
She's kinda a chicken like me, so even though I bet she *could* get out of the crib, she doesn't.

Yo Ro...2 things...
a) A family I nannied for had this tent-like thing they put over the crib to keep her from climbing out, I'm pretty sure it's just called a crib tent, but not sure...anyways, if you don't think she's ready, you could try that.
b) My "sis" put a baby gate at the door of my niece's room so even if she got outta the room, she didn't get through the whole house...

GOOD LUCK!

She is quite smart at 19 mos - and brave for daring the crib escape landing. Good luck, I look forward to hearing all about the escapes. You know, once she starts going to daycare and really burning some energy with the other tots, she will be too tired to get up and cry in the middle of the night. Right?

hummmmmm I was in a toddler bed at 2. I often got out of the bed with fears etc. and laid down in a bright hallway. I don't know that I slept but I was always left to feel insecure and wanted the bright light on and to hear adult voices. The tent thing sounds good...Maybe some kind of light thingy that helps her to relax and just doze off. Kam's has the right idea about day care. We ended up with both boys in our bed for many many years. Georges sis who was a social worker supervisor had 4 boys in bed with them. I don't feel so bad now. Hey can you please link M &K's adoption link to your blog pleeeeeze! Thanks for considering..
